Jen Naumann grew up in southern Minnesota as an addict of such flicks as Indiana Jones and The Goonies until she discovered John Hughes, and spent her high school days locked away writing love stories with a sci-fi twist. Married to a farmer in southern Minnesota, she tries to follow the madness of her four active children while balancing an imagination that never shuts down. Interview 

Please welcome Paranormal Keepers' author Jen Naumann to Diane’s Book Blog. 

What is your favorite part of the story, Paranormal Keepers? 

That’s a tough one, but I think the very last part that takes place in Harper’s bedroom. It started out as a heart wrenching scene…I really felt her emotions when writing it. That’s all I can say without giving anything away!

How long did it take you to write Paranormal Keepers?

If you were stranded on a desert island which of your characters do you want by your side?

Without a doubt, Dexter! He’s brave, sweet, cute, and knows a bit of magic. Plus he’s really into movies and music like I am, so we’d have plenty to talk about.

Who or what inspired you to be a writer?

I’ve never been able to get my imagination to shut up and started writing in the third grade. I think it was a combination between reading Stephen King novels at a really young age and watching 80s movies. I was obsessed with anything from The Goonies, and Indiana Jones to Weird Science and St. Elmo’s Fire (or anything with Molly Ringwald). Guess it explains why I like to write paranormal romance.

    

How do you overcome writer’s block?

I have to completely shut out writing and do something entirely different. Usually mindless things like riding the back of my husband’s Harley or driving tractor are when I get a spark of creation.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I have several projects in the works, but the sequel to Paranormal Keepers (Paranormal Legends) is definitely one of my favorites. It takes place in New Orleans, a city I have yet to visit, but have a bit of an obsession with. Here’s one of the opening scenes between Harper and someone who shall remain nameless to avoid spoilers (keep in mind this passage is incredibly raw and has not been to any kind of an editor yet!):

Though it’s considerably warmer in Louisiana than back in Minnesota this time of year, I’m grateful that I chose to wear a loose fitting t-shirt, jeans, and tall boots. The walk from the bus station to Madia’s house isn’t too long, but there’s an unsettling chill in the dark night only made worse by the nagging feeling that we’re being followed. It reminds me all too well of the creatures that found me after I used a Ouija board and relentlessly harassed me to the point I thought I was going crazy.

The neighborhoods we pass through are barren with very little trees and filled with more concrete and electric poles than grass, giving it more of an industrial feel. Many of the simple houses are in serious need of TLC. Nearly every tiny yard is closed off with a chain link fence, and more than half of them have a dog that seems anxious to take a bite out of us.

Readjusting my bag on my shoulder, I look over my shoulder. “Aside from the dogs, it’s way quieter here than I pictured.” The creepy feeling doesn’t come as a surprise whatsoever.

“That’s because you’re picturing Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. Don’t worry, I’ll take you down there sometime so you can get a real feel for the city.”

“How did you meet this Madia person?”

“I came here on a practice hunt with Sophia to try to catch a Leprechaun.”

I stop. “Holy crap. They’re real?”

“Yeah, but they’s not cute and friendly the way everyone portrays them. They do have an obsession with gold, though, always stealing whatever they can get their greedy hands on. They tend to kill anyone who gets in their way.”

“Yikes,” I say, feeling a little queasy with the thought.

What do you prefer paperback, hardcover, or ebooks? 

I love all three! I usually only get hardcovers when Stephen King releases something new. I love the convenience of buying ebooks no matter where I am and the fact that I always have my phone with me and can read at any moment. But when I’m on vacation, I love the feel of an actual book in my hands.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I truly appreciate the fact that you gave my work a chance and when you take a minute to leave a review online! Writing is a part of who I am and what I’ve wanted to do my whole life, so it means the world to me when someone says they enjoyed my stories. I don’t care if I ever become famous, I just love it when readers and bloggers appreciate what I’ve created. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!
